Fort Lauderdale…. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee, Inc. (MLKCC) has announced its calendar of 2019 King Holiday events.

Wednesday, January 16thParade Participants& Volunteer Meeting for King Holiday Celebration

Individual and organizations signed up for the parade as well as those who have not registered are invited to the Parade Orientation Meeting, 6:30 PM at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center, 2650 Sistrunk Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale. Cash and money orders will only be accepted for late registration.

Thursday, January 17thMLK Day of Service Project –  Annual Clay Tile Bash. The community is invited to participate in this service project at MLK Montessori Academy from 3:30 to 7:00 PM.  Volunteers will put their artistic impressions on clay tiles which will be displayed at the Academy.  Refreshments will be served.  For more info contact MLK Montessori Academy (754) 322-6550.

Friday, January 18thMLK Birthday Celebration

Pre-school age children are invited to the African American Research Library and Cultural Center for the annual MLK Birthday Celebration from 10:00 AM to Noon, co-sponsored by the Children Services Council.  The children will be entertained by magicians and storytellers and will participate in arts and craft projects to enhance their knowledge of Dr. King and his contributions.  Of course cake and ice cream will be served.  For more info contact Janice Carter at (954) 253-5081 or Marion Williams at (954) 383-5669.

Friday, January 18:  Destination Friday

Join the MLKCC and the The Friends of AARLCC at the African Research Library at 2650 Sistrunk Boulevard for an evening of culture, southern comfort cuisine and a signature adult drink – Peace Punch.  The night will include live music by the Ladies of Soul, a spoken word and musical performance, prizes and more.  $10 admission.  21 years and over.  For more info call (954) 357-6282.

Saturday, January 19:  Youth Leadership Summit

This free event will take place at the African Research Library from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and will include food, entertainment, giveaways, speakers and workshops giving high school students an opportunity to engage discussions on pressing social issues in their community including in both mental and physical health, social justice and branding.  A special panel discussion will be led by members of the Miami Chapter of the National Basketball Retired Players Association.

Monday, January 21:  King Holiday Parade and Non-violent March

Line up for the county’s largest King Holiday Parade starts at 8:00 AM for a 9:00 AM parade start.  The route starts at Lincoln Park, heads east on Sistrunk Boulevard to NW 7thAvenue (Avenue of the Arts) then south to SW 2ndStreet to Esplanade Park.  Go to www.kingholidaycelebration.comfor parade  applications.

Monday, January 21:  King Holiday Celebration of Unity & Multicultural Festival . Immediately following the end of the Parade the Multicultural Festival will get started at Esplanade Park, 400 SW 2ndStreet in downtown Fort Lauderdale.  Bring your lawn chairs and celebrate Dr. King’s legacy while enjoying cultural cuisine and entertainment from the Affiliated Soul Team Band, the Remixx Band and other cultural performances highlighting Broward’s cultural diversity.  For vendor opportunities please call Shirley Baker (954) 296-8655, or go online to www.kingholidaycelebration.com
